The pre-pandemic way of doing things is no longer working in logistics. The industry is facing mass resignations, labour shortages, and employee demands for better work-life balance. Covid-19 acted as a catalyst that changed the future world of work in logistics. 

40% of the employees who quit in the Great Resignation quit due to burnout and 20%  cited lack of flexibility as a reason. MIT Sloan reported that the logistics industry had a 7% attrition rate from April 2021 to September 2021.

Their research also found that toxic workplace culture is the top cause of resignation – 10.4 times more likely to cause attrition than bad pay. The popular quip, people leave managers, not jobs, is true.  

Many of the professionals who are leaving take to freelance work, using their expertise to work for themselves. Most such employees happen to be top talent.

In January 2022, CargoWise announced they have made enhancements to the operational, financial, and compliance features. Below are some of the updates made to the platform;

Operational Updates

• A new electronic port connection was implemented with key French ports. Cargowise is integrated with AP +, CI5 and S1 port community systems. This feature will send and receive seaport messages for container loading or discharging in France or its overseas territories. Clients are now allowed to view message statuses, container statuses, and workflow events. Through this feature clients can efficiently manage and track cargo with a range of messages available that allows;
  • Customers to send electronic requests to the port to create files under a system
  • Request the status of containers either loading or discharging in France or from one of its overseas territories
  • Submit a manifest of the list of goods expected to be in each container which will be then sent to the customs through the port.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental international organization developing and producing worldwide standards. ISO standards cover various activities, from making products and managing processes to service delivery and supplying materials.

ISO/IEC 27001:2013 specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an information security management system within the context of the organization. It also includes requirements for the assessment and treatment of information security risks tailored to the needs of the organization. The requirements set out in ISO/IEC 27001:2013 are generic and are intended to be applicable to all organizations, regardless of type, size or nature.

ISO certification has become the norm, and it works as a seal of approval. The benefits include, among others, improved quality management, more efficient processes, increased protection of the company and its assets, increased international reputation, potentially increased revenue or competitive advantage, and enhanced client satisfaction.

The Biden administration issued a proclamation to modify the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) of the U.S. (HTSUS) on the 23rd of December 2021. The proclamation was published with a 30 day implementation timeline.

The US International Trade Commission (USITC) has implemented the changes to the HTS with World Customs Organization’s (WCO) five-year updation of the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System. 

WCO makes this update every 5 years in order to keep the HS up to date with all the latest technological developments. These changes will also provide visibility into new product streams and emerging global issues.

The modifications to the HTS will impact 350 products and product groups that are under various sections in the HTSUS. It will change the tariff codes of the 350 importing products. The suggested modifications also make changes to the nomenclature of the HTSUS changing;

• HTSUS headings
• HTSUS subheadings
• Section notes
• Chapter notes
• Additional U.S. notes
• General notes

In the proclamation, pursuant to section 1206(a) of the 1988 Act, President Biden determines that the proposed modifications is “in conformity with United States obligations under the Convention and do not run counter to the national economic interest of the United States”.

A Global Freight Forwarding and Logistics Company from the Indian Subcontinent Region, the company presence marks offices in 18 countries with a skilled workforce of over 2300 staff in 60 offices.

Problem

While the company rolled out CargoWise One in its global offices, implementing the software in India posed a unique set of challenges. As India was the biggest country of operations with up to 25 offices, implementing a new policy for staff that was on the legacy software for 15 years, required a specialist service partner with strong regional capabilities that understood the local context.

It was also essential that data integrity with master data, and training staff on all CargoWise One system features was done correctly as India constituted the most significant component of the company’s global rollout.

Solution

SFL was able to utilize its strong regional presence and domain expertise in conducting the implementation of CW1 on CRM, Freight Forwarding and Finance Modules for the company. By using SFL’s CargoWise Experience of 70 implementations and in-depth knowledge of geo compliance, especially Indian Taxation – which is known to be complex – the SFL team provided software implementation, pre go live training and pre & post go-live support.
